Project overview

Lorong Sisi Yap Ah Loy is in dire need of rectification work due to its run-down condition. We previously adopted this lane as part of placemaking efforts to make the city a livable place.

In this project, we have been given the chance to work along side the local authority, contractors and community to improve the situation at hand through :

  • Conducting brief cultural mapping of the area

  • Outlining issues on-site

  • Consulting possible interventions/solutions

  • Overseeing improvement works from A-Z

Thus, the question asked:

How do we make cities both visually exciting and safe, with spaces that fit seamlessly into the lives of locals?

01

Understanding The Problem On Site

THE SITUATION

We kick off with a thorough briefing from the local authority, then solidify direction through a collaborative internal team meeting.

Research

By studying past reports and local reception, we gain valuable insights that inform our approach and ensure future lane improvements resonate with the community.

User behavior on site + Cultural Mapping

Instead of formal interviews, we opted for a series of casual conversations with laneway users. This spontaneous approach, free from rigid questionnaires, helped us build rapport and elicit honest feedback without intimidating passersby. Our goal was to truly step into their shoes, experiencing the space through their daily routines and understanding their concerns deeply.

By meticulously mapping out user journeys throughout the day, we gained a nuanced picture of the laneway's flow and potential friction points.

This user-centered approach proved invaluable, allowing us to pre-empt any design missteps that could disrupt the existing rhythms of the local community. Ultimately, prioritizing their lived experiences ensured our efforts wouldn't impede daily activities but seamlessly enhance the laneway for everyone.

Scope and goals of the rectification works

Collaborating with the local authority, we define the project's scope and goals, ensuring alignment with their long-term vision. Simultaneously, we leverage on-site cultural mapping to uncover community needs and weave them into the project fabric, maximizing impact and eliminating redundancy.

Piecing It Together

DESIGN PROCESS

Design Process

We collaborated with the local authority to populate the site with the agreed-upon content.

To ensure the design recommendations aligned with community needs and the on-site situation, we carefully reviewed them based on the research done weeks before.

Rectification

Approval

Once the design recommendations were finalized, we submitted them to the local authority for approval.

During this stage, discussions about budget, maintenance requirements, and contractor selection took place.

Commencement of Work

After the client approved the design scope, we proceeded with commissioning contractors in phases for the construction work.

We conducted weekly site visits to monitor progress and ensure adherence to the project timeline.

While there were some minor hiccups along the way, we effectively managed them to achieve successful project completion.

Final Design Recommendation

1/ Improving wayfinding

This can promote a sense of security by making it easier for people to find their way around, reducing confusion and disorientation, and fostering a sense of familiarity with the space.

2/ Combining cycling racks with bollards

This solution can deter unauthorized vehicle parking while enhancing the laneway's visual appeal. It will also prevent them from blocking emergency vehicle access, creating blind spots for pedestrians and cyclists, increasing risk of collisions

3/ Improving community garden

This helps to foster the sense of belonging through shared efforts and collaborative care, nurturing both plants and community spirit.

Final Outcome

Post Project Additional Improvement

4/ Enhanced alleyway lighting

This helps users to foster a sense of safety by letting users see clearly and navigate confidently, deterring potential threats.
